Media Plan Auto Negation and Auto Harvesting

Keep your campaigns efficient by automatically removing poor-performing keywords and promoting the ones that drive conversions.

Overview

Trellis continuously evaluates every keyword, ASIN, and target to decide what should stay active, what should be paused, and what should be promoted.

Two key systems handle this automatically:

  • Automatic Negation – removes poor performers.

  • Harvesting Rules – promotes strong performers into manual control.

You’ll find both in Advanced Settings → Negation & Harvesting Rules.

🔍 Automatic Keyword & ASIN Negation

Negation prevents wasted ad spend by stopping your ads from showing on search terms or ASINs that don’t convert.

Options

Setting Description
Auto Negation (On/Off) When enabled, Trellis automatically excludes low-performing or irrelevant search terms. This is done based on the ACOS target and is configurable using the thresholds.
Your Negative Keywords / ASINs Add any known poor performers manually — Trellis will respect these across all future optimization cycles.

💡 Auto Negation ensures you’re not repeatedly paying for clicks that never lead to a sale.

Example

You’re selling “Running Shoes.”
If “trail sneakers” gets 30 clicks and 0 conversions, Trellis automatically adds it as a negative keyword — stopping further spend on it.

🌱 Harvesting Rules

Harvesting Rules define when Trellis should promote successful search terms from Auto Campaigns into Manual Campaigns.

This is part of Trellis’s “discovery-to-optimization” loop:

  1. Auto campaign tests broad queries.

  2. High-performing terms are harvested.

  3. Trellis creates them as Exact or Phrase targets in manual campaigns.

  4. The same term is negated in the Auto Campaign to avoid duplication.

Configurable Criteria

Rule Description
Conversions Minimum conversions required before harvesting.
Clicks Maximum clicks allowed without conversion (set to 0 to rely on conversions only).
Days (Lookback) Time window Trellis uses to evaluate performance.

Example

If your rule says “Harvest after 3 conversions or 25 clicks within 14 days”:

  • Trellis automatically promotes any term that meets those thresholds.

  • The system then pauses that term in Auto and begins optimizing it manually.

💡 Tip: Trellis automatically connects Negation and Harvesting — any harvested term is instantly negated in its original Auto Ad Group to prevent overlap (this is part of Trellis’s Tunneling system).
